Condition-based Monitoring (CbM)
Industrial facility maintenance action is usually based on fixed schedules or equipment failure. Under the fixed schedule approach, actions can be taken too early which is wasteful. Resources devoted to properly functioning equipment could be used elsewhere. Equipment failure maintenance occurs too late causing a loss of production and emergency replacement equipment at premium costs.
CbM is a maintenance approach based on monitoring and reacting to the performance state of equipment through connected sensors. The system is capable of ultrasonic and pressure monitoring, thermographic testing, and oil analyses. The goal is to remedy possible failures well before they lead to equipment shutdowns. It requires ongoing, real-time monitoring of issues such as vibration and temperature from IoT software which enables data collection and analysis.
The benefits are many:
Reduction or prevention of asset failures
Increased uptime
Maintenance only when needed
Insight as to how to increase asset performance
MRO accuracy in the timing of ordering or inventorying the right parts
